Librarian’s Lament January 23, 2007
Posted by L Wolfe in Library Stuff.trackback
Via the Washington Post, here’s a lament from a librarian who claims that the buzz among librarians for “information literacy” is trumping a “love of books.” Personally, I’m not sure I agree with Mr. Washington. Libraries have always been about organizing information for the convenience of the user, and providing diverse media for its patrons’ needs. All I do know is that I was encountering the “What do you need to read for, with computers and television” mentality 20 years ago– when I was six and one of the few kids in my class who actually went to the library and read of her own accord. I suspect that kids don’t get excited about books because they don’t see adults get excited about books. What’s a librarian to do?
