As most of you already know, Anne Watts will be retiring from St. Louis Public Library in order to serve as the Assistant Director of the Boynton Beach City Library in Florida. Read about Anne and her future plans in this Southwest City Journal article.

So, this First Friday will be a very special one. We will celebrate with Anne Watts at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave.)on March 2nd from 6 pm to (at least) 8 pm.

Joanne Vogel is compiling a “memory book” in honor of Anne. If you would like to contribute to the book, feel free to bring something with you on Friday and add it to the scrapbook.

We hope you will join us this Friday! Everyone is welcome. Even if you have never met Anne Watts, go ahead and join us, anyway. Anne would love to see new faces in addition to the familiar ones. So, drop in for a drink or stay for appetizers or dinner (it’s up to you).

If you have seen this notice on the various library listserves, please do RSVP to Joanne Vogel. Since I am not sure whether Joanne would be comfortable with making her email address available to everyone on the WWW, please email me (Stephanie Hood) at sjhy83@mizzou.edu and I will forward your RSVP to Joanne. As always, if you find that you can join us at the last minute, please do!

Thanks to Joanne for arranging this gathering!

As of this week, I left my job as a Public Technology Assistant at St. Louis Public Library to take a position as Access Services Library at Jefferson College.  Although I am very excited about my new position, I am sad to leave behind my position at SLPL.  I highly recommend this part time paraprofessional position to any library science student.  The position offers more “bang for the buck” library experience than most others.  Besides working with the public to use the library catalogs, Internet computers and electronic databases, PTAs assist with other library activities here and there such as reference.  I worked regularly at 3 different branches and also made my appearance at 5 other branches.  You learn so much about organizational structure being sort of in the middle of different levels of managers and staff.  Plus, and this is a big one, you get to work for Barb Knotts! :)  Those of you who took 7301 know this is a great benefit.  She is the best and demands the best from her staff.  Here is the listing:

Public Technology Assistants: St. Louis Public Library
Position Type    Part-Time, Employee
Experience    0-1 Years Experience

The St. Louis Public Library has part-time openings for Public Technology Assistants. The positions require an Associates Degree (preferably in Computer Science) and 1 year of Technology related Customer Service experience. Must have a basic understanding of PC hardware/printers and experience with software applications (especially MS Office and Internet). Type 35 wpm; physical ability to perform moderate manual labor to include lifting, maneuvering, and placing objects weighing up to 50 lbs. The positions require use of a personal car, and flexible work schedule. Installation of hardware and software, database updates, trouble-shooting, repair or swapping of equipment and software and keyboarding skills are essential. Must have an excellent work record/attendance and the ability to work well with minimal supervision. Should possess strong written and verbal communications skills and the ability to communicate clearly with non-technical users in person, by telephone and in writing. St. Louis Public Library offers comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental and life insurance. All interested candidates should forward an application and/or resume by email to: Human Resources or by snail mail to: St. Louis Public Library Attn: Human Resources 1415 Olive Street St. Louis, MO 63103 FAX: 314-539-0335

Join your fellow students, professors, alums and colleagues at 10am this Saturday, Feb. 24th at the Blackberry Café (http://www.cafeblackberry.com/) in Clayton. We will be discussing the future of cataloging - what the next generation library catalog will (or should) look like, how catalogers’ jobs will be different, and whether or not cataloging courses belong in the LIS curriculum. Both those with cataloging experience/knowledge and those without (and all those in between!) are encouraged to join us to share their experiences and thoughts.

Here are a few short articles to get us started:

Antelman, K., et. al. “Toward a Twenty-First Century Library Catalog.” Information Technology and Libraries. Vol. 25 no. 3 (September 2006): 128-39.
(available full text through Wilson Web’s Library Literature and Information Science Full Text database)

Tennant, Roy. “The New Cataloger.” Library Journal. 15 April, 2006 http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6321736.html.

We hope to see you Saturday!

Multnomah Library in Portland, OR Shocked by Losses February 19, 2007

From the Library Journal: Portland Library Stunned by Losses

Apparently, a library known for its widespread and prolific circulation finds that it’s suffering a very bad loss problem.  From the article:

“[A]ccording to an in-house study, six percent of its 1.7 million items have not been returned after being borrowed, and another six percent are just not in the system…

“While county officials said more oversight was needed, no one was clear on whether Multnomah’s record is truly disturbing, since comparable statistics are scarce.” [emphasis added]

I find it rather disturbing that no one’s used our shiny new technologies to start indexing things like losses until now.  I wonder if something like this will encourage libraries to circle the wagons and start drawing up numbers about losses in their own library.   And, if so, what policies do you think will result?

Social Networking February 15, 2007

Illinois state senator Matt Murphy has filed a bill that creates the Social Networking Web site Prohibition Act. This bill requires that all public libraries in Illinois block access to all social networking websites on any computer accessed by the public. Similar Federal legislation fizzled out last May. What would a bill like that mean for our libraries?

Anne Watts, who has shared her endless library knowledge with us through SLPL and through MU LIS classes, is retiring from SLPL at the end of March, when she will move to Florida.  There will be a special retirement open house on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, from noon-9pm of the Machacek Branch of SLPL.  The address is 6424 Scanlan Ave, St Louis, MO 63139.  Their phone number is (314) 781-2948.  Anne’s a remarkable librarian and teacher, and this is a great opportunity to let her know how she’ll be missed.

Speak Up about Library Services February 15, 2007

The Missouri State Library would like to hear from you about what kinds of Missouri State Library programs can help your library provide better services. Please join us at a Town Hall meeting.

  • What type of programs work for public, school and academic library clientele and library staff?
  • What is needed to make these programs work in terms of time, funds and staff resources? What part can local libraries be expected to take?
  • What do libraries that don’t currently take part in grants and programs need to be able to participate in state library-based projects?
  • How will we know if the library clients and library staff are satisfied with how these programs are implemented in their area.

Please join the discussion at one of these locations:
