Instruction Specialist
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Instruction and Reference Specialist is centrally involved in the Library’s instruction program, working collaboratively with LIS faculty to support instruction and reference services. Daily personal contacts, mainly face-to-face and via the telephone, with SIUE staff and student and community users, are an integral and vital part of the job responsibilities. The Specialist also represents the Library and the University when giving tours or providing user services. The incumbent will identify appropriate reference and instructional resources, and assist library patrons in their use. Assist with promotion of the library, focusing on the delivery of library resources and services. Assist with the training, supervision and evaluation of the reference and instruction of graduate assistants. Contribute to the development of new educational initiatives, including the creation of web-based instruction and virtual reference service. Assist with the evaluation of online reference sources. Keep abreast of changes in library instructional technology, both hardware and software. Troubleshoot hardware and software used for reference and instruction. Assist Library faculty with the creation of instruction programs, bibliographies and handouts. Work with the teaching faculty to identify appropriate resources for curricular support of classroom instruction. Teach library instruction sessions in support of the curriculum and to promote information literacy and lifelong learning. Assist with LIS orientation and public relations programs.
TERMS OF APPOINTMENT:Professional staff position, 12 month, continuing appointment.
SALARY RANGE: Salary dependent upon credentials and experience. Excellent fringe benefits program.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: In-depth knowledge of print and electronic library resources. (Academic library experience and/or MLS coursework, preferred.) Working knowledge of diverse technologies and applications for library instruction. Strong teaching skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to serve a diverse community of library users. Understanding of course design and the creation of teaching materials. Ability to organize, coordinate and direct the activities of student assistants. Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
