open source is generally perceived as "free". As a commercial developer, incorporating open source inside your commercial software is actually not free. A key overlooked issue is that the open source has legal obligations if distributed with the commercial software. Not tending to these legal obligations tends to cause problems, sometimes leading to lawsuits. Here is a link to a site that discusses the typical obligations in more detail....http://sourceauditor.com/FAQ.php

I was pleased to find that you "recorded" a chat with Barbara Knotts, and that others are able to get a peek into the life of a truly committed professional! I am blessed to be a part of the team along with Barb, Dr. Leo Hirner and Karen Hein that offers the ISLT 7301 Introduction to Information Technology class to students residing in the St. Louis, Kansas City, Omaha and Columbia areas. Barb is a tireless contributor and a great role model and teacher for up and coming professionals. I am certain that students get the SISLT's best when they have Barbara Knotts in the classroom! I look forward to future developments in the course, and in her continued contributions to the education of library professionals.

Cheers!

Laurell K. Hamilton was the keynote speaker today October 1, 2008 at 1:00 pm to kick off the Missouri Library Association (MLA) Annual Conference. She delivered an inspirational talk about the development of strong female characters in her writings. She talked about Anita Blake, who is a strong character who delivers the message that women are smart, strong, and able to fight against abuse. Throughout her stories she tries to convey that falling in love is not perfect. Laurell said it is important to help her young readers know that sex is not bad, life if not perfect, and that condom use is the preferred use. Laurell has a background in biology, but she aspired to write fantasy from her childhood. She advised inspiring authors to commit to write two pages per day, to be content with initial imperfection by drafting and leaving blanks to be filled in later. By the time you are in your third draft you will be able to refine your words, select the good stuff and through away all the extras. Several attendees felt that they understood the need for books about vampires and supernaturals more after attending the keynote session. Immediately after the keynote there was a book signing in the trade show hall.
