Librarians are a gift January 13, 2007

Great post by Susan Baerwald in our SLA St. Louis Chapter Blog that mentions an article in the Dec ’06 issue of Inc.com.  The Office: The Thought that Counts lists ten unique gift ideas for executives.  There are only eight items including “IT support that understands the business” and “Two restaurants within a block or two of the building” and “A Librarian” is on the list.  Although the author states that much of what people need is online, and that staff is proficient at using Google, she also points out that a librarian can “operate with a level of nuance and finesse that technology can’t match.”

I am all for highlighting the skills of librarians to the masses, but being a gift listed with other seemingly unobtainable requests makes it feel like a librarian is a luxury, an afterthought, not necessary, but nice to have.  I’m not complaining, but we as a profession have to change our image and that of libraries to “Office Essentials.”  Better yet, “Life Essentials.” 🙂
