REFERENCE LIBRARIAN

The University City Public Library has an immediate opening for an entry-level, full time professional librarian to work in the Reference Department. Shared duties with three other full-time reference librarians and one part-time librarian include Information Desk duties; adult book selection; collection development; evaluating electronic and web based reference services; teaching Internet and library skills to patrons; outreach to special communities; and readers’ advisor service. Hours of duty include working some evening and weekend hours. MLS from an ALA accredited library school required (or expected by summer 2007).

The University City Public Library serves an inner suburb of St.
Louis. Home to two former Poets Laureate of the United States, the city of 37,500 has a diverse population which is 48% African American, 48% white, and 4% other ethnic and racial groups. The city is adjacent to Washington University, and the library is located at the west end of the bustling “Delmar Loop” business and arts district, and across the street from the Center for Contemporary Arts and Washington University’s new music facility. The collection numbers 180,000 print and audio-visual items. The University City Public Library belongs to the nine-member Municipal Library Consortium of St. Louis County, which serves a combined population of 150,000 with 500,000 volumes and shares a joint Sirsi/Dynix Horizon library automation system.

This individual should possess a sense of humor, creative problem‑solving skills, and have an interest in developing and implementing innovative services and programs.
