St. Louis Saturday discussion group, March 24th March 19, 2007

Posted by apenningster in Library Stuff.

Join your fellow students, professors, alums and colleagues at 10am this Saturday, March 24th, at the St. Louis Bread Company in Clayton (*more info about location below) for a discussion on open source software options for libraries, particularly when it comes to integrated library systems.  Are these viable options to the well-known (and expensive) commercial ILS products in use by most libraries today?  Does open source mean “free”?  What new features do they provide that patrons might find useful?  This ties in nicely to our discussion last month on the future of cataloging.  All are welcome!

A few brief articles and a blog posting to get us started:

Breeding, Marshall. “An update on open source ILS.” Computers in libraries 27.3 (March 2007).  [Available full text through Wilson Web’s Lib. Lit. and Info Science Full Text database]

Tennant, Roy. “Open letter to ILS vendors.” TechEssence.Info blog posting (2/15/2007). http://techessence.info/node/83

Weber, Jonathan. “Evergreen: your homegrown ILS.” LibraryJournal.com. 12/15/2006. http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6396354.html

A few open source ILS products and implementations to take a look at:

Koha (http://www.koha.org/)

Nelsonville Public Library is using Koha – http://search.athenscounty.lib.oh.us/
Evergreen (http://open-ils.org/)

Evergreen is being developed and maintained by the Georgia Public Library Service for use by the Georgia Library PINES Program, a consortium of 252 public libraries – http://gapines.org

Other interesting projects in the works:

Univ. of Rochester’s eXtensible Catalog – http://www.extensiblecatalog.info/
