C. Berger Group, Inc., one of the nation’s oldest and largest library consulting and staffing firms, has been exclusively retained by Columbia College Chicago to fill the position of Director of Library.

The Director provides vision and leadership for the Columbia College Chicago’s Library and is responsible for the organization, administration, operation, and evaluation of Library services and facilities. The Director leads and mentors a staff of 20 librarians and 19 support staff, energizing them in support of library initiatives. The Director researches, promotes and implements funding and grant opportunities, including a Friends of the Library program. The Director works closely, both collaboratively and collegially with the other directors of the research units, trustees, administrators, faculty, students and outside groups. The Director promotes and markets the College and its academic programs by providing access to quality information resources. The Library teaches students to value first-rate research resources. The Director maintains professional memberships which support the library initiatives and foster the understanding of emerging issues affecting libraries and academic institutions as a whole.

The Columbia College Chicago Library has a teaching mission and is committed to preparing users to be lifelong learners in an information rich society. The Library promotes this mission by offering a variety of traditional library services, including tailored library instruction. Because usage numbers in library instruction classes and other library services have continuously increased along with enrollment in the College, the Library has been able to hire five new staff members over the last five years. Staff are very active in a variety of professional associations and activities which inspire and improve their daily work activities. The Library has a current budget of over $3 Million and has seen its budget increase every year as well.

Columbia College Chicago is an undergraduate and graduate college in downtown Chicago, the fifth largest private educational institution and second largest provider of private undergraduate education in Illinois, as well as the country’s largest and most diverse private arts and communications college. The Library is one of seven research units which make up the Office of Academic Research and the Director reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Academic Research/Dean of the Library. Columbia College Chicago’s principal commitment is to provide comprehensive educational opportunities in the arts, communications and public information, within a context of enlightened liberal education.

Requirements for the position include a MLS from an ALA-accredited institution and a minimum of ten years progressively responsible library experience, including five years in a supervisory role. An additional graduate degree, an arts or communications background is desired; demonstrated professional commitment, either through relevant professional organization activities, publications, or instruction; successful fund-raising experience; experience with space planning, facility renovations, or new construction is desirable; and experience with Friends of the Library programs and/or grant writing are especially desirable.
