Belleville Public Library, Belleville, Illinois is accepting applications for a full-time Archives & Genealogy Librarian.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

A genuine interest in history and in the preservation of records for posterity.

A high level of commitment to customer service and in making materials more easily accessible.

Good organizational ability to manage a wide range of tasks.

Ability to have long attention span and the ability to focus on detail and accuracy.

Ability to skim and understand an extensive and varied range of material.

Ability to be adaptable and have a high degree of flexibility.

A commitment to the profession and to professional development.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Good computing and technology skills and an interest in applying new technology to archival practice; including the use of databases and Microsoft Office such as Word, Excel and Access.

Competence in administrative procedures and project management ability.

Excellent communication skills for dealing with a diverse range of people.

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of library science.

The ability to make public presentations and conduct training.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.

Ability to function independently within the scope of Library policies and practices.

Ability to bend, stoop, reach, lift, and carry/move heavy books and other library materials.

Ability to work evening and week-end shifts.

The knowledge of local history is a plus.

Ability to travel occasionally.

The ability to read German is a plus.

Education, Certification, and Experience Required:

A Masters in Library Science and a minimum of two years library experience working in genealogy and archives.

Active pursuit of a MLS or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.

City Residency is required within 15 months from date of hire.
