Graduate Student Paper Competition
2007 Missouri Library Association Annual Conference

Information compliments of Dr. Budd and SISLT listserv

Graduate students in library and information science are invited to submit abstractsbto be considered for inclusion in the Graduate Student Paper Session at the 2007 MLA Conference. The Conference will be held in Springfield, MO from October 3-5. The Session will be sponsored by the Missouri Association of College and Research Libraries (MACRL), the Missouri chapter of Beta Phi Mu, and the MU School of Information Science and Learning Technologies. Please consider submitting to the Graduate Student Session; your papers can help make this a success.

Paper topics should address the challenges, questions, and opportunities that face libraries of all types. Examples may include:

  • Studies of users and user communities
  • Evaluation of library services, collections, and/or access
  • Implications of organizational structures for libraries
  • Technologies employed in libraries
  • Social issues that affect libraries and librarians
  • Economics of information access
  • Information literacy

This is not an exhaustive list of possible topics, but is intended to provide an indication of the families of issues that could be addressed.

Interested students should submit a 250-500 word abstract that states the question or problem that is addressed, the means and methods employed, and (if possible) any available preliminary findings. To qualify for acceptance, submitting authors must be LIS students (part-time or full-time) during the fall 2007 semester. Submissions should be sent, preferably as an MS-Word e-mail attachment, to John Budd of SISLT, and should include the author(s) name, affiliation, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. The deadline for submissions is May 15, 2007.

The submissions will be reviewed by a committee including representatives of MACRL, Beta Phi Mu, and SISLT. Two papers will be selected for presentation at the MLA Conference; each presentation will be 15 minutes in length, allowing for 10 minutes of questions for each paper. Individual and collaborative submissions are welcome. Authors of selected abstracts will be notified of acceptance by June 15, 2007. Presenting authors will have their Conference registration waived, and the author(s) of each of the two papers will receive an honorarium of $100 (to be shared in the case of co-authorship).

*SISLT students whose papers are selected for presentation may be eligible for some funding from the School to attend the Conference.

In this month’s issue of American Libraries, ALA listed available sessions, preconferences, and other events that will be offered as part of the 2007 ALA Annual Conference.  Here are a few of my favorites:

  •  Libraries, Older Adults and Technology
  • Library Day at the Hill
  • Sins of Young Adult Literature
  • 36th Annual Stonewall Book Awards and Brunch
  • Celebrating the Library Bill of Rights
  • Advocacy Institute

Check out the full listing for yourself!  If you are not yet an ALA member, but would like to attend the Conference, it’s the perfect time to join.

It will save you big bucks in registration fees, and you’ll get
other perks throughout the year.
